About Kelly W. Mego

Hi. I’m Kelly W. Mego. I became a Personal Family Lawyer because I want to help people navigate what really happens to their financial and spiritual assets when they die. I’ve realized that the typical process of writing a will is antiquated and gives people a false sense of security about what will happen when they die. When my parents died, the court probate process delayed my ability to carry out decisions. And when I was finally named executor, I quickly regretted not having discussed the details of their wills with them when they were still alive. The issues caused by co-ownership of a mortgaged home by my sisters and me were not addressed in their plan at all. I learned that the court process is not one that promotes privacy or family harmony, and it does not facilitate easy transfer of assets.

My goal is to be a trusted advisor to Texas families in navigating the maze of legal and financial decisions that arise throughout their lifetimes. I focus on young families, blended families and single parents, and I’m proud to offer Kids Protection Planning in addition to wills and trusts. I’m passionate about keeping my clients out of court, and out of conflict. I love educating you about how to get the best possible estate plan for your family situation, whatever that may be. Building a relationship is the foundation to getting comfortable enough to talk about WHAT you want, and WHO you really want to handle everything you’ve worked so hard for. Knowing you made informed decisions, and that you have your legal and financial affairs, and your spiritual and legacy wishes in order, protects your family and helps you sleep better at night.

I graduated from Texas A&M University in College Station (whoop!) and then went on to receive my Doctor of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law Houston in 1996. During law school, I was the Editor of the school’s Environmental Law Journal and worked as a law clerk in a boutique firm. I practiced in state government for eight years, then joined a firm handling family law, bankruptcy, estate and probate matters, environmental, and oil and gas cases. It was a mix of my experience in training title abstractors about intestacy law, my litigation experience, and my own parents’ outdated estate plan I discussed earlier, that led me to open my own firm that focuses solely on estate planning and the importance of building relationships with my clients.

And most importantly, I’m the proud mom of Joseph, an Aggie freshman and FFA Officer who is my inspiration and my reason to always keep striving, and stepmom to four other amazing sons and daughters whose families and accomplishments add joy and light to my life.

As your Personal Family Lawyer® I’d love to start protecting the people you love and everything else you care about today. I look forward to meeting you!
