Advocacy and a passion for helping people is ingrained in me. I began my legal career representing clients in family law, landlord-tenant, civil rights matters, adjudicating disability discrimination complaints, and then counseling Equal Employment Opportunity complainants. However, a personal health scare changed everything and served as a wake-up call.
It prompted me to prioritize creating a comprehensive estate plan to alleviate any burden on my family in the event of my incapacity or death. During this process, I reflected on legacy. It resonated with me that legacy is more than tangible things, like granddad’s model car collection or an inheritance. Legacy is also about the value of intangibles, like memories. Growing up, I was very close with my grandfather, “Peepop.” He was my best friend. During my teenage years, Peepop was chronically ill, in and out of the hospital. Realizing that he may not have much time with us, I asked him to write me a letter. At that age, I didn’t have the language to tactfully convey what I was really looking for…what I needed. I wasn’t comfortable suggesting that he was at death’s door, but I wanted a message from him to me that I could look to whenever I missed him. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the tools to express myself, and I never got that letter. Another pivotal moment came several years after my grandmother passed away, I learned that she had unclaimed property held by her state.
Reflecting on the concept of legacy, reaffirmed its significance beyond material possessions to encompass cherished memories and values. My own experiences, including the absence of a meaningful letter from my grandfather and the discovery of unclaimed family assets, underscored the importance of proactive estate planning.
This transformative experience motivated me to establish Kith + Kin Law, a firm dedicated to educating the community, families and businesses while providing comprehensive estate planning with a transparent and client-centric approach.
