About Joyce Cheeks

Attorney Joyce Farr Cheeks focuses on the areas of Estate Planning and Probate, Serious Injury Cases, Workers’ Compensation, Entertainment Law, and Collaborative Law. Her overriding goal in all areas of her practice is to provide honest, passionate, skilled, and confidential representation with a personal touch.

A Spartanburg native and Columbia resident, Attorney Cheeks opened the Law Office of Joyce Farr Cheeks, P.C. in 1993 in Columbia, where she continues to serve the people of South Carolina to this day. In addition to providing exemplary counsel on legal matters, she often finds herself advising her clients on overcoming life’s challenges, such as how to resolve family and estate disputes or transition out of a troubled marriage. A Certified Life Coach, Attorney Cheeks believes that only by taking the time to listen closely to her clients and getting to know them well can she provide the best possible representation. Attorney Cheeks also serves as a civil court mediator and a collaborative law proponent. Her zealous client-centered advocacy is reflected in her high percentage of client referrals.

Attorney Cheeks earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics from South Carolina State University. She received both her Juris Doctor (J.D.) and Masters in Business Administration (M.B.A.) from the University of South Carolina in 1985. In addition to practicing law, Attorney Cheeks has taught law-related courses in the graduate business program at Webster University and at Midlands Technical College in Columbia, S.C., as well as high school and junior high school math and science.

Attorney Cheeks began her legal career as General Counsel and Deputy Director of the South Carolina Children’s Foster Care Review Board. Two years later she accepted a staff attorney position at the South Carolina Court of Appeals, followed by a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Alexander M. Sanders, Jr., Chief Judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals.

Over the course of her career, attorney Cheeks has served in numerous leadership capacities, including the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce; Board of Directors of South Carolina Communities in Schools; Board of Directors of the YMCA Black Achievers; and Interim Executive Director of the South Carolina American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) during a critical period of transition for the organization.

On any given day, you can find Attorney Cheeks in the office of her thriving law firm or in the court room advocating for a client. But on other days, you may find her in front of an audience sharing her strategies for preserving family legacies, coaching organizations’ leaders on conflict resolution, or simply doing a radio/television interview about the negative impact that fatherlessness has on families and our communities. Whatever Attorney Cheeks is doing, you can be sure she is helping to elevate her clients and her community.

What makes PFL lawyers different?

  • Asset-1how-you-hire
    How you hire us.

We begin with a comprehensive inventory of everything you own, and everyone you love, and consider it all in a working meeting, called a Family Wealth Planning Session, to guide you to clarify your financial life and legacy goals before we draft a single document.

  • Asset-1@3x
    How we plan.

We work with you throughout every life stage to map out the most likely scenarios for you and the people you love, planning for each as your life, the law, and your assets change over time.

  • Asset-1what-we-protect
    What we protect.

Our Life & Legacy Planning process ensures everything that matters most -- from your financial assets to your values, insights, stories and experience -- are captured and documented during your life and cared for over the generations to come.

  • Asset-1transparency
    What you see.

Transparency in our process, and our fees … all of which are flat fees, agreed to in advance, based on your choices and with no surprises, ensuring we stay on the same side of the table - supporting you to make a lifetime of great decisions - every step of the way.

  • Asset-1DElivery
    How we deliver.

Our systems help you get clear and organized, overcoming the exact issues that keep most estate plans from actually working when they are needed most. We help you leave your family with a gift of love, and not a mess.

  • Asset-1work-150x150
    How our plans work.

One-and-done estate plans focused only on money are a recipe for a big mess. We help you throughout every stage of life and be there for the people you love, when you can’t be.
