Hi. I’m John W. Heck. I became a Personal Family Lawyer because I have seen the consequences of failed estate planning in my immediate family. Through the long and difficult probate process, I realized that I needed to protect my loved ones, preserve my wealth, and ensure my legacy was a proud one. If you’re reading this, you probably feel the same way.
We help families, senior citizens, and blended/non-traditional couples in the Northern Virginia and D.C. area. As your guide, we show you how to navigate the maze of legal and financial decisions needed for a great estate plan. We understand that every family is unique, and we spend the time to get to know you and your circumstances to ensure your legacy is preserved for generations.
Our focus is on foundational estate planning, Kids Protection Planning, and Elder Law, but we go far beyond the documents. Our purpose and calling is to educate, empower and inform so you can make the best decisions that result in the outcome you want. We have the tools to create a path for you should you choose to walk it with us.
I graduated from the Washington College of Law in 2008, and am licensed in Virginia, D.C., New Jersey, and Georgia. I am a retired Air Force officer and aviator, and bring a lifetime of experience in working through the impossible to get results. I’ve been a Secretary of Defense Executive Fellow, the Chief of Strategy for the Air Force Reserve, worked closely with senior leaders, and bring a broad perspective that makes me, our team, and our law firm different from other estate planners that only provide documents and view you as just another transaction.
I am a co-chair of the Wills, Trusts and Estate Section of the Fairfax County Bar Association, am active in our local church, and provide educational workshops at not cost to local communities.
And, most importantly, I am a husband to my wife Amse, and father of three wonderful children: EV, Caroline, and Henry.
Anya F.: John Heck completed a miracle for my family [. . .] His kindness knows no bounds. I highly recommend John Heck because he brings a personal element into his work by showing genuine care and concern for the well-being of his clients. The amount of time and effort he invests in his clients is truly admirable. Without him, my sister and I would not have the knowledge we need to support ourselves for the rest of our lives. If you need help with your estate planning, go to John Heck because he will provide excellent advice.
Pamela M: I retained John Heck of Legacy Lawyers to prepare my estate plan and am so happy that I did! He was always available and made my planning seem as if it was his top priority. He listens to what you say and what you want; and then tells you very honestly what can be accomplished. Very thorough and detail-oriented, he eased any fears I had and was able to get everything done in an easy, efficient, and professional manner. If you need sound and honest advice regarding estate planning, John Heck is the attorney you need.
Todd B: John Heck did an outstanding job on our trust and will. [I] can’t say enough good things about his treatment of us and the work he did for us. I went into the process knowing I wanted a good plan for our estate, but having only some understanding of the value of a trust. Now that I have worked with him. I wish I had set up this trust years earlier! I am so glad I did not go to any of the “fast food” version of trust attorneys out there knowing what I know now. John is about as hard working as I have encountered, and he is a brilliant attorney. He put in weekends and nights to get our documentation done in time to beat all deadlines he and we set for us to complete the process. We will continue to use his services for all future trust/will related work and recommend to anyone else, if you have not yet set up a will and trust, or if you have one you think was not set up well, get in touch with John and he will do things right for you!
We begin with a comprehensive inventory of everything you own, and everyone you love, and consider it all in a working meeting, called a Family Wealth Planning Session, to guide you to clarify your financial life and legacy goals before we draft a single document.
We work with you throughout every life stage to map out the most likely scenarios for you and the people you love, planning for each as your life, the law, and your assets change over time.
Our Life & Legacy Planning process ensures everything that matters most -- from your financial assets to your values, insights, stories and experience -- are captured and documented during your life and cared for over the generations to come.
Transparency in our process, and our fees … all of which are flat fees, agreed to in advance, based on your choices and with no surprises, ensuring we stay on the same side of the table - supporting you to make a lifetime of great decisions - every step of the way.
Our systems help you get clear and organized, overcoming the exact issues that keep most estate plans from actually working when they are needed most. We help you leave your family with a gift of love, and not a mess.
One-and-done estate plans focused only on money are a recipe for a big mess. We help you throughout every stage of life and be there for the people you love, when you can’t be.
