Joe Nelson

After 20 years in the legal field, I opened J. Nelson Law to focus
on what I enjoy most about practicing law: working with people to solve
real problems. When I had my twins, I felt the responsibility of raising
them right and caring for them, both when I was there and just in case I
wasn't. I made some financial decisions that I thought would protect them,
but the more I learned about estate law, the more I realized that my moves
fell short. I've also see estate plans that fail -- plans that make private
information public and decisions that result in conflict. Today, my plan
will leave my family protected, out of court, and out of conflict. Let's

I started practicing law in Illinois, and moved to North Carolina shortly
thereafter to raise our family. I've represented individuals, business
owners, insurance agents, other attorneys, congregations, and more, taking
several cases to trial and then defending them in the Court of Appeals.
Between the constant acrimony and billable hours, I started to look for
something different. During my work as a mediator, I found a passion for
keeping parties *out* of conflict, and when defending business owners, I
admired the drive to build a *plan that* *works*.  These led me to open J.
Nelson Law, where I get to do both every day: engaging with hard-working
North Carolinians to build an estate plan that works and that will keep
families out of conflict.

I'm based in Ballantyne, in south Charlotte. I've represented clients from
the mountains to the coast in North Carolina, and can continue to do so
virtually. I'm happy to visit clients in Mecklenburg and Union counties in
person, and we're regularly in Brunswick County, as well.
