Estate Planning Is More Than Documents. It Is a Message to the People You Love.
Your estate plan is more than a set of legal documents. It may be one of the most important messages you ever send to the people you love.
When the time comes—whether because you are unable to make decisions for yourself or because your family is experiencing the pain and shock of losing you—your plan can communicate something deeply meaningful: I anticipated this moment. I thought about you. I wanted to make things easier for you. I cared enough to prepare.
That is the message you want to leave.
I’m Daniel A. Rubin, Esq., a Maryland and District of Columbia attorney, mediator, and Personal Family Lawyer®. I help families turn that message into a practical plan—one that protects the people they love, anticipates the challenges they may face, and gives their family a clear roadmap when they can no longer provide one themselves.
My approach has been shaped by years of helping people navigate some of life’s most consequential moments. As a family-law attorney and mediator, I have worked with people facing divorce, custody disputes, family conflict, and domestic abuse—including helping victims obtain legal protection for themselves and their families. I have also represented clients in employment matters.
Before and alongside my legal practice, I spent more than 15 years working with complex business, regulatory, compliance, and employment issues in highly regulated environments. That experience sharpened the analytical, problem-solving, and risk-management skills I now bring to estate planning.
You don't have to choose between an attorney who understands the law and one who understands people. You should have both.
That's why I don't start by asking whether you need a Will or a trust. I start by getting to know you and the people who matter most to you.
Who would make decisions for you if you couldn't? What would happen to your family if you died unexpectedly or became incapacitated? Are there family dynamics that need to be considered? And what are you ultimately trying to accomplish for the people you love?
Through my Life & Legacy Planning® process, we work through these questions together. I help you identify the issues that matter, understand your choices, anticipate potential problems, and develop a legal plan tailored to your family, your circumstances, and your goals.
You shouldn't have to become a lawyer to understand your estate plan. My job is to make the law understandable, give you the information you need to make good decisions, and then put those decisions into a sound legal plan.
When your family eventually needs that plan, I want them to find more than legal paperwork. I want them to find clarity, protection, guidance, and evidence of your love and foresight. Make it easier for them and let them know your care extends beyond life itself.
Your estate plan is ultimately a statement of what matters to you and a reflection of the care you have for the people you love.
If you've been putting off estate planning because you aren't sure where to begin and you are too busy to dedicate time to these complex matters, you don't need to figure it out first. That's what I'm here for. Let's start with a conversation about the people and things you care about.
Your family is unique. Your circumstances are unique. Your estate plan should be, too.
