About Brent Whitlock

Welcome! I’m Brent Whitlock. I became a Family Business Lawyer because I am passionate about helping business owners navigate the winding path from invention or business idea through business success to create and secure generational wealth for their families.

My practice encompasses intellectual property, business matters, family life and legacy planning, and residential real estate transactions. Based in western Chicagoland, I help business owners throughout the U.S. make sound legal, insurance, finance, and tax choices. I will help you design plans for your business and family that achieve your goals for your life and legacy.

I earned my law degree magna cum laude from Illinois Tech Chicago-Kent College of Law, where I now serve on the Advisory Board of the Patent Hub and as a volunteer instructor of the Patent Practicum class. I also earned bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I was a National Science Foundation fellow. I am also an award-winning author, industry leader, engineer, entrepreneur, and international speaker with dozens of publications. In addition to over a decade as an engineer and entrepreneur, I have over fifteen years experience in law, about half in Biglaw firms and half in boutique firms.

I have been married to Ellen for over 30 years, with whom I have two children, Amanda and Wil. While Ellen and I went to college and married in Illinois, there is a special place in my heart for California, where our children were born.
