Have You Seen the Secret?

April 6, 2007 – 11:49 am

I’ve directly experienced what the movie the Secret shares with the world, which is that we manifest what we focus on in our lives.  And, if you are able to dream it, you can do it.

It’s been proven to me time and again.

I dreamed of graduating first in my law school class well before I ever went to law school.  I dreamed of practicing in a renovated old building in the center of town and and bringing back the idea of the Personal Family Lawyer, even though I couldn’t see how to do it because there was no proven model for me to follow and the building I wanted to practice in housed a chiropractor.

And now I dream of teaching other attorneys who also want to make a real impact in the world and holding Family Wealth, Health, and Happiness events around the country with speakers like Jack Canfield, Jim Rohn, Elizabeth Gilbert (author of Eat, Pray, Love - my new favorite book), Loral Langmeier, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Susan Sarandon educating you to not only pass on your financial wealth to your children, but to also pass on your emotional, intellectual and spiritual wealth and to use that wealth to make a difference.

This vision is so huge that sometimes I feel over-awed by it and often don’t even feel as if it belongs to me.  Oftentimes, I hear my mind saying "Alexis, who are you to dream that big?  Come on, really! But, the dream continues."

My sister pointed this out to me the other day when I was sharing my vision and she said, "Alexis, you are too funny.  Only you would think of getting Jada Pinkett Smith to speak at your event and not think, ‘Nah, that would never happen.’ Instead, you think, sure that could happen."  And, she laughed.

But, I got to thinking about her words and realized they are absolutely true AND the only thing that holds anyone back is the fear of dreaming.

You see, what I’ve realized is that whenever I get really close to dreaming about my deepest, most heartfelt desires, my mind gets really scared and tries to turn off. I call it fuzzy brain mode. And, it’s masking millions of negative thoughts buzzing around my head like a swarm of bees in a hive.

Suddenly, I can’t focus.  The picture is all blurry.  I feel uncertain and confused.  My mind won’t let me picture THAT happening because if I allow myself to dream THAT big and then it doesn’t happen, I’ll be devastated and never recover.  Or, at least that’s what my mind thinks.

But, of course it’s a lie.  It’s my mind’s way of staying in control of the situation and keeping me from reaching my highest purpose.

Why does my mind want to do that?  Because it can’t help it! It’s limited in it’s thinking.  Maybe you’ve heard the expression "Monkey Mind?"  I totally relate to the picture of my mind hopping around like a monkey from one anxiety to another.  It can’t help it.  It’s scared to death.

So, what can you do?

The real Secret is to begin to recognize and be aware when you are holding back from dreaming what you really want.

For 30 seconds right now, commit to dreaming about something you want more than anything in this world, but don’t really believe could ever happen.

That’s fine - don’t believe it.  But, for the next 30 seconds, allow yourself to dream it. If your mind is getting cloudy and you feel a little queasy or nauseous, that’s it, just keep going!  You are on to something!  Now bring the picture into a little clearer focus.  Do that everyday until you can really see that thing you are dreaming about and then get a journal and write it down.

Now, you’re dreaming …
